Abstract

As India transitions toward a ‘cash-light’ economy, Hyderabad has emerged as a frontrunner in digital financial adoption, driven by its robust IT infrastructure and a tech-savvy demographic. The study explores the usage patterns, consumer preferences, and adoption barriers of digital payment wallets (such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm) among residents of Hyderabad. Using a descriptive research design, primary data was collected from a diverse sample of 200 respondents across key urban clusters including Hitech City, Secunderabad, and Banjara Hills. The findings reveal that Unified Payments Interface (UPI) integration is the primary driver of wallet usage, with over 85% of respondents utilizing digital wallets for daily micro-transactions, utility bills, and retail shopping. The study identifies convenience, speed, and cashback incentives as the leading motivators for adoption. However, despite high penetration, significant concerns regarding cyber-fraud, transaction failures, and data privacy remain the primary deterrents for consistent high-value usage. Demographic analysis indicates that while Gen Z and Millennials dominate the user base, there is a rising trend of adoption among the 45+ age group, catalyzed by post-pandemic behavioural shifts. The research concludes that for Hyderabad to achieve 100% digital financial literacy, service providers must prioritize offline security education and enhance the reliability of cross-bank server communications.
